The Baden-Powell Challenge award is the ultimate individual achievement for Guides. It is for Guides who wish to 'stretch' themselves as individuals but it is not about achieving a set standard or about being academically able.
It is expected that a Guide will only do it once and then towards the end of her time at Guides. Guides work through the award as individuals, it is not for working on as a patrol or unit. To undertake the award Guides must have:-
There is a lot of work involved with the Baden-Powell Challenge and it is not unusual for a Guide to take 12 -18 months to complete it. The syllabus for the award can be found in the Guide Badge File, the G File and on the Girlguiding UK website (this has some very helpful notes attached). Leaders should be careful not to fix standards but should encourage and support their Guides when they choose to work on the Baden-Powell Challenge. Once she has decided to start the Challenge your Guide will need assistance in preparing a Personal Action Plan. To help her get started you will possibly have to help her plan how and when she will complete each challenge, how she can tackle them and choose which ones she would like to do.
Once your Guide or Guides have decided to start on the Baden-Powell Challenge you will need to ask them to fill in a Baden-Powell Challenge Registration form. This will give the County an idea of the number of Guides undertaking the Challenge, the rate of drop out, and estimated numbers for future Baden-Powell Adventures.
When she has completed the 10 Challenges, or at least 8 of them with the remaining 2 planned and scheduled she needs to complete a Ready to Attend a Baden Powell Adventure Notification form, this is for registration records only.
To attend a County Baden-Powell Adventure Leaders must get the appropriate application forms from the County Office. If she does not want to attend one of our two Bucks County Adventures there are others that are available. See BP Adventures calendar in the right-hand panel.
When your Guide or Guides have attended an Adventure and has finished all 10 clauses she will need to meet with the District Commissioner* who will review her evidence and discuss with her, her understanding of the Guide Promise. She can then be presented with her Badge and Certificate. To obtain these you will have to complete a Baden-Powell Challenge, Application for Award Badge and Certificate form. Th is is to be posted to the County Badge Secretary with a unit cheque for the appropri ate amount of money. Currently £3.50 per badge and certificate, this includes postage.
*Some Districts do not currently have a Commissioner and in these circumstances a neighbouring Districts' Commissioner can be approached or the Division Commissioner.
Now that your Guide has finished her Baden-Powell Challenge make a big thing of awarding her Badge and Certificate.
