Queens Guide Award
What is it?
The Queen's Guide Award is the highest award attainable for members of Girlguiding UK. It is similar to the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and includes aspects such as Community Action, Residential Challenge and Service in Guiding.
The following page is taken from a micro website created by a group of Queen's Guide candidates from Bucks, who are working on the Queen's Guide award.
Why do it?
It's the highest achievement in Guiding
- For the personal challenge
- For the fun
- So that you can meet new people
- To try new activities
- Develop new skills
- It looks good on your C.V.
- You can give something back to Guiding
- You can Surprise Yourself!
How can I do the Award?
- Discuss with your Unit Guider/District Commissioner your interest in taking the Award.
- Contact your County Queen's Guide Co-ordinator to find out the arrangements for your county.
- Choose a personal mentor who can offer advice and guidance through the Award. Your mentor can be your Unit Guider, Commissioner or anyone else you know through Guiding.
- Register for the Award by completing 'The Guide Association Queens Guide Award' form (S/QG) provided by your co-ordinator or from the girlguiding UK web site: Queen's Guide Registration Form. The form is returned to your co-ordinator who will ensure you have support through out the Award.
- Once registered you need to have a planning meeting with your mentor - this meeting will be your official 'start date'. REMEMBER - you can take up to 12 months out from the Award which should be planned for at the beginning if possible.
- Planning is key in ensuring that all the clauses are completed within your time frame.
- Don't worry about money - there are bursaries/grants that are available to you to help you complete the Award.
When can you do it?
You can do your Queen's Guide Award at any time starting at age 16 and finishing by your 26th birthday. There is also a time limit of three years, but you can take up to a year's break in the middle, for exams, university or whatever you need. They do prefer it if you plan this before hand, but any sudden calamities can be accommodated, so don't worry!
